Gaddafi threat to attack Europe

9:45 am on 3 July 2011

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has threatened to attack Europe in revenge for NATO's air strikes on Libya.

In an audio message broadcast to a supportive crowd of tens of thousands in Tripoli's Green Square, Colonel Gaddafi said Libya would target European "homes, offices, families which would become legitimate military targets, like you have targeted our homes".

His message comes after France confirmed it had supplied weapons to anti-government rebels, delivering arms to Berber tribal fighters near Tripoli.

He called on his supporters to "march on the western mountains", the area where the weapons had been delivered.

Friday's rally was one of the largest in recent times in the Libyan capital and the message was the first time that Colonel Gaddafi had been heard of in weeks, the BBC reports.
