Novak Djokovic of Serbia has beaten defending champion Rafael Nadal to take his first Wimbledon tennis title.

The 24-year-old Serb claimed the title with an emphatic 6-4 6-1 1-6 6-3 victory in the final on Sunday.

Djokovic's first Wimbledon victory coincides with his confirmed status as the new world No 1.

"I managed to achieve (my) lifetime goal and I managed to make my dream come true," he said.

"It's just an incredible feeling ... this is the best day of my tennis career."

Top seed Nadal had not lost at the grasscourt grand slam since the 2007 final against Roger Federer, a 20-match streak.

Djokovic fell to the famous Centre Court lawn and after consoling his opponent he bent down, plucked some grass from the court and put it in his mouth - something he said was a spontaneous gesture.

"I didn't know what to do for my excitement and joy," he said, adding that the grass tasted good.
