Bahamas bans shark fishing

8:52 pm on 6 July 2011

The Bahamas has banned shark fishing in its territorial waters and prohibited the sale, import and export of shark products.

The new law will effectively turn all 630,000 square kilometres of Bahamian territorial waters into a shark sanctuary, the BBC reports.

The archipelago joins Honduras, the Maldives and the Pacific nation of Palau in outlawing shark fishing.

Environmentalists say some 73 million sharks are killed each year worldwide.
