Last shuttle launch delayed by thunderstorms

Heavy thunderstorms in Florida are threatening the launch of the last United States space shuttle.

The shuttles are being retired after a mission lasting 30 years. NASA plans to temporarily use Russian spacecraft to ferry NASA astronauts to the space station.

NASA forecasters say there is only a 30% chance of favourable weather for the scheduled launch of the space shuttle Atlantis from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Friday.

The ABC reports the 135th and final 12-day mission will provide a year's supply of food and spare parts to the International Space Station.
