A huge explosion has torn through the main Greek Cypriot naval base in Cyprus killing at least 12 people and injuring more than 30.
The seat of the explosion was at a munitions dump attached to the Cypriot base at Zygi on the south coast of the island, the BBC reports.
Authorities believe a fire broke out at among a store of explosives.
There are suggestions that the material had been confiscated from a ship travelling from Iran to Syria that the Cypriot authorities had impounded two years ago.
A large number of properties in nearby villages have been damaged and about 150 people have been left homeless.
