Russian authorities say they have arrested eight suspects over the hijacking of a cargo ship that disappeared on a voyage from Finland to Algeria.

The suspects are said to include Russian, Estonian and Latvian citizens.

The Arctic Sea was found on Tuesday in the Atlantic Ocean near the Cape Verde Islands after being missing for two weeks.

Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov says the 15 crew members were taken on board a Russian vessel and are in good condition.

Speculation over the cause of the ship's disappearance has ranged from pirates, to a mafia dispute, to a commercial row.

The officials say divers are searching for survivors in the flooded turbine hall.

The blast's cause is unknown but reports say investigators believe a transformer exploded during repairs
