FBI to investigate 9/11 hacking report

8:16 am on 15 July 2011

The FBI is to investigate a report that employees of News Corporation tried to hack into the phone records of 9/11 victims.

The accusations were made by US Congressman Peter King (R, New York) in a letter to the agency after a report in the Daily Mirror newspaper in Britain on Monday.

The Daily Mirror said that News of the World journalists offered to pay a New York police officer to retrieve the private phone records of victims of the terror attacks.

The Daily Mirror said the journalists wanted the phone numbers of the dead as well as details of the calls they made and received in the days leading to the attacks on 9 November, 2001.

News Corporation has declined to comment.

News Corp chief Rupert Murdoch last week shut down the News of the World. The paper published its last edition on Sunday.
