Civilian casualties rise

1:03 pm on 15 July 2011

The United Nations has delivered a grim report on civilian casualties in Afghanistan, which are worse than ever.

The ABC reports almost 1500 civilians were killed in the first six months of this year - 15% more than the same time last year.

Pressure-plate explosive devices (IEDs) are the main cause.

The International Committee of the Red Cross says security remains the biggest challenge for civilians.
