Divisions at unity conference

7:13 am on 17 July 2011

A conference in Turkey aimed at unifying the opposition against President Bashar al-Assad of Syria, has ended in division.

Kurdish activists pulled out of the National Salvation Congress

accusing other participants of marginalising them.

The BBC reports opposition to President Assad includes many different groups, from secular liberal to Islamists but no overall opposition leader has emerged.

At least 28 people were reportedly killed in Syria on Friday, in protests that are described as the largest since the anti-government uprising began in March.

Human rights groups say that about 1400 civilians and 350 security forces personnel have died in the four months of protest.

International journalists are denied access to Syria and the BBC says the figures cannot be independently verified.

The government blames the unrest on ''armed criminal gangs'' backed by a foreign conspiracy.
