Drug smuggler Corby described as 'insane'

The Australian government is under renewed pressure to get Schapelle Corby transferred home, after a psychiatrist described her as clinically "insane".

Corby, 32, is a convicted drug smuggler. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison after she was caught at Bali airport in October 2004 with 4.1kg of marijuana in her boogie board bag.

Associate Professor Jonathan Phillips was asked by Corby's family to visit Kerobokan prison in Bali to assess her mental state.

His report, which is being forwarded to Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, says she won't survive her sentence unless she's transferred out of the prison.

Describing himself as a "sceptic", Dr Phillips says Ms Corby is in very poor condition and extremely depressed. He told New Ideahe had no doubt her condition is genuine.

He told Morning Report she is psychotic. He said she has been admitted to a police hospital twice after trying to take her life.

Dr Phillips said the prison in Bali is not equipped to deal with psychiatric illnesses.

He said the preferred arrangement would be for her to be transferred to Australia for treatment and then finish her sentence.

Dr Phillips is a former president of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.
