Sri Lanka's biggest Tamil party has won provincial elections in the island's former war zone.

The Tamil National Alliance took control of 18 out of 26 councils in the north

and east.

Supporters of President Rajapaksa won in all other areas being contested.

The BBC reports the TNA was in effect a proxy of the Tamil Tigers, who were defeated in May 2009.

The election commissioner said voting day was largely peaceful.
