Myanmar border clashes prompt China rebuke

Chinese state media are reporting fresh clashes between security forces in Myanmar and armed ethnic rebels in an area close to the border with China.

In recent weeks 10,000 people have fled into the Chinese province of Yunnan to escape the conflict, officials there say.

Beijing, one of Myanmar's main allies, says the government there should bring the conflict to an end. The move is a rare admonishment of Myanmar's military junta by China, the BBC reports.

China's foreign ministry urged Myanmar to safeguard stability in the area and protect the rights of Chinese citizens living there.
