More rain in South Korea

8:57 am on 30 July 2011

Torrential rain in South Korea has left 70 people dead or missing. Seoul has recorded its heaviest downpour in history.

The ABC reports almost 0.5 metres of rain fell in the capital in less than three days, turning main roads into rivers of churning, muddy water.

At least 16 people died in landslides in the south of the city, while a raging river left 18 dead near the capital.

More than 12,000 people were forced from their homes and at least a 1000 factories and shops were under water.

More than 30 bridges and roads in and around Seoul were closed by the deluge.

Troops have started a massive clean-up effort, with about 40,000 joining thousands of police in the clean-up.
