Island cabinet resigns

The entire cabinet on the island of Cyprus has resigned.

Deutsche Welle reports they had been under pressure since a munitions explosion killed 13 people and wrecked the country's main power plant on 11 July.

President Demetris Christofias said on Thursday that he had no intention of stepping down.

Incompetence is blamed for the storage of munitions near a power station in the Mediterranean heat.

The munitions were confiscated from a ship sailing from Iran to Syria in 2009.

The government was already under pressure due to an economic crisis.

Last week, European Central Bank council member Athanasios Orphanides said that without immediate action, Cyprus might follow Greece, Ireland and Portugal in asking for an EU handout.
