US, France and Germany condemn Syria's Assad

4:16 pm on 6 August 2011

The US, French and German leaders have condemned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over the use of indiscriminate violence against protesters.

The White House says US President Barack Obama has called France's Nicolas Sarkozy and Germany's Angela Merkel and to discuss new measures against the Syrian regime.

Earlier, Syrian activists said security forces shot dead at least 13 people in unrest across the country in the past day reports the BBC.

The protests show no sign of abating, despite a government crackdown.

Syrian state television broadcast from the city of Hama, which has become the focus of the protests against Mr Assad's rule, saying the city was now under government control.

The city has been under bombardment for days as tanks and troops sought to regain control from opposition groups.

Activists say about 2000 people have been killed by security forces since protesters took to the streets in March.
