At least four people have died when a grandstand collapsed at a concert in the US state of Indiana.

Police said another 40 people had been injured, some critically reports the BBC.

The Indianapolis Star reported a number of people were trapped beneath the wreckage, while others were moved to a tunnel under the main stage.

The newspaper said winds of up to 96 kilometres per hour had been felt at the site.

The collapse happened as some of the 12,000 concertgoers were being evacuated from the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand at around 9pm local time.
