Demonstrators arrested outside mosque

8:13 am on 12 September 2009

Eight people have been arrested during a demonstration outside a mosque in north-west London.

About 1000 people gathered outside Harrow central mosque, trying to stop a group called Stop Islamification of Europe, who planned to demonstrate there on the eighth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Bricks, bottles and firecrackers were thrown at police officers in riot gear. There were also skirmishes as some demonstrators broke a police cordon.

Police say arrests were made for possession of offensive weapons and breaching the peace.
