Provincial governor target of attack on convoy

A car bomb has killed one person and injured at least seven others involved in a convoy for a provincial governor in the southern Philippines.

The ABC reports the explosion in the province of Sultan Kudarat was believed to have targeted Maguindanao Governor Ismael Mangudadatu. However, he escaped unhurt.

Colonel Prudencio Asto says an improvised explosive device placed in a parked car was detonated as the convoy passed.

Governor Mangudadatu told a television interview he was the target of the attack.

The third car in his convoy seven of vehicles was hit by the explosion.

Governor Mangudadatu lost his wife, sister and several political supporters in the 2009 Maguindanao massacre, when than 50 people were killed.

The ABC reports members of a rival clan are among nearly 200 people charged with the murders.
