The Californian-based rocket maker SpaceX is planning to make a test flight to the International Space Station now that NASA has retired its space shuttle programme.

In 2010, SpaceX became the first private company to successfully launch and return a spacecraft from the Earth's orbit.

The trip to the International Space Station is planned for November 2011 and would be the first visit by a privately-built craft to the space station.
