Zimbabwe leader wants sanctions lifted

5:46 am on 13 September 2009

Senior European Union delegates who have met President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe say he raised the subject of lifting sanctions against his government.

The EU representatives say they complained during their talks about the slow pace of political reform and about human rights violations and the rule of law in Zimbabwe.

They say they did not discuss the issue of sanctions in any detail.

But President Mugabe says he has honoured the terms of a power sharing agreement and it's time for sanctions to be lifted.

The BBC reports the EU team later met prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai. They will be in the country until Sunday.

Last week, African leaders called for sanctions against Zimbabwe to be lifted.
