President Shimon Peres of Israel collapsed during a ceremony in Tel Aviv and briefly lost consciousness on Saturday.

Haaretz newspaper said he collapsed at the lectern during a conference and was treated by medics at the scene. The BBC reports he was later taken to hospital.

Mr Peres, 86, was appointed president in 2007 for a term of seven years, having held numerous cabinet posts including that of prime minister since the 1970s.

Dr Rafi Valdan told the Ynet news website the president feels well and he expected him to return to work on Sunday. He said heat could have played a part in the president's collapse.

Mr Peres was born in Poland in 1923.
