Israeli-Palestinian violence prompts call for restraint

10:13 am on 22 August 2011

International concern is growing over a fresh wave of violence between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants.

Israel has carried out air strikes in the Gaza Strip, while militants have been firing rockets into Israel.

The United Nations, United States, European Union and Russia have all called for restraint.

The trigger was a series of attacks in Israel last week when eight civilians died, the BBC reports.

Five Egyptian policemen were killed as Israel pursued the gunmen.

Since those attacks, Palestinian militants have fired more than 100 rockets and mortars into Israel, killing one man in Beersheba.

An emergency meeting of the Arab League has condemned Israel's air attacks on the Gaza Strip and says the United Nations should take steps to end the raids.
