Bodies recovered from Queensland house fire

10:23 pm on 24 August 2011

Emergency crews have found four bodies in the ruins of a Queensland house where a fire is believed to have claimed the lives of 11 people.

Among the dead are eight children or teenagers from two Pacific Island families. Three men managed to escape the flames, although one is being treated for serious burns.

The blaze tore through the house in Slacks Creek, south of Brisbane, about midnight on Tuesday local time.

Police say the two families staying in the house were asleep downstairs when the fire began, but it is not known how it started, the ABC reports.

It took hours for emergency crews to secure the site and four bodies have been uncovered on Wednesday. It is not known if smoke alarms were fitted in the house.

Neighbours reported hearing screams and a series of explosions as the fire took hold and engulfed two vehicles outside the house and four large LPG cylinders.

Police are investigating the cause of the blaze.
