More than 1400 people have appeared in court in connection with the riots in England two weeks ago.

Data from the Ministry of Justice shows that 157 of them have been convicted, 327 bailed and almost 800 remanded in custody.

The BBC reports this rate of 62% being held in custody compares with the usual rate of 10% of those appearing before a magistrate.

Shops were looted, buildings burned and five people died during the riots which began on 6 August and lasted four nights.
