Rugby World Cup news boycott threat in Australia

8:16 am on 25 August 2011

Some of the biggest news organisations in Australia are threatening to boycott reporting on the Rugby World Cup from inside tournament venues, unless coverage rules are changed.

The Australian Newspaper Publishers Association, which represents Fairfax Media Australia and News Ltd, wants the International Rugby Board to remove restrictions on publishing video from games on their news websites, including a ban on placing video advertising at the start of clips.

But the IRB says it is concerned that the inclusion of advertising within videos could associate advertisers who have not paid to be sponsors with the tournament.

It believes the issue is really about the publishers trying to make money off footage they have not paid for.
