Deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe of South Africa says the rate of new HIV infections in the country is growing faster than prevention efforts.

He told parliament that prevention programmes will be prioritised in a new national strategic plan being developed for the next five years.

Nearly one in every ten South Africans is estimated to have HIV.

The government has spent billions of dollars trying to combat the disease.

More than 1.3 million people now receive anti-retroviral drugs.
