Former New Zealand Prime Minister and current UN Development Programme chief Helen Clark is named as the 50th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes magazine.

Ms Clark was the only New Zealander to make the list.

She is one step below the Queen and several steps below US journalists Diane Sawyer and Christiane Amanpour of ABC TV.

The top three spots are held by Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton and President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil.

The list was issued on Wednesday.
