Aid sent to North Korea after heavy flooding

8:17 pm on 29 August 2011

The International Red Cross says heavy rain and landslides have affected 30,000 people in North Korea.

An official from the aid organisation says about 1000 families are without adequate food or shelter after their homes, livestock and crops were destroyed by flooding.

The BBC reports the sending of food aid to North Korea has prompted international debate after several countries voiced concern that restrictions on entering the country would prevent them from monitoring the delivery of the supplies.

But the Red Cross says it has evidence that aid is reaching the most vulnerable.
