US evacuee from ice now improving

An American man is improving in Christchurch hospital after being evacuated from Antarctica on Monday.

The man, who is part of the United States Antarctic programme, had a suspected heart attack on Saturday.

The Royal New Zealand Air Force sent a C130 Hercules to Antarctica on Monday morning.

The 16-hour round trip involved both defence and civilian medics.

The RNZAF has been praised by the man's employer, which says the quick-turn around from New Zealand was impressive.
