Former Guantanamo prisoner killed in Afghanistan

9:07 pm on 3 September 2011

A former Guantanamo Bay prisoner who joined the Taliban upon return to his native Afghanistan has been killed by NATO-led forces in the east of the country.

Afghan officials say he was released from the United States run prison in Cuba three years ago after being held there for five years.

Afghan and NATO-led troops killed Sabar Lal in an overnight operation when he emerged from a building carrying an assault rifle.

Around 170 foreign captives are still held by the US military at Guantanamo.
