Fires destroy hundreds of Texas homes

Dozens of wildfires in Texas are now known to have engulfed more than 1000 homes.

Texas has been suffering its worst drought since the 1950s.

Powerful gusts from Tropical Storm Lee have been fanning the flames, but the National Weather Service said the winds had dropped on Tuesday.

Speaking on Tuesday, Texas Governor Rick Perry said more than 40,000 hectares had been scorched by at least 57 wildfires in Texas over the past week.

The biggest of the blazes is a 26 kilometre wide fire in rural Bastrop County.

About 5,000 people in the county have been forced to leave their homes and hundreds have taken refuge in emergency shelters.
