Destructive typhoon moves to Cambodia

7:26 am on 1 October 2009

The powerful typhoon that has hit the Philippines and Vietnam with deadly force is now battering Cambodia.

The BBC reports that at least nine people have died in Kampong Thom province in central Cambodia.

Typhoon Ketsana killed up to 40 people when it slammed into central Vietnam, flooding towns and villages along the country's long coastline.

In the Philippines, where the typhoon hit over the weekend, at least 246 people are known to have died.

Relief officials in the Philippines, struggling to feed and shelter hundreds of thousands of displaced people, admit they have been overwhelmed by the disaster. Forecasters say a new storm forming in the Pacific Ocean was likely to enter Philippine waters on Thursday.

Thailand is mobilising troops to provide humanitarian assistance in anticipation of floods from the typhoon, Reuters news agency reports.
