Gaddafi says he's not in Niger

10:59 pm on 8 September 2011

Fugitive Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has dismissed speculation that he has fled to Niger, calling it lies and psychological warfare.

The comments in a telephone call to a Syrian television station were Colonel Gaddafi's first in a number of days, the BBC reports. The station says he called from Libya.

There have been reports of high-level fugitives arriving in the West African nation from Libya and speculation that Colonel Gaddafi might try to join them.

Niger says it will decide how to deal with him only if he does enter the country to seek asylum.

Libya's National Transitional Council has asked Niger not to take him in.
