Burqas to be banned in Holland

2:00 pm on 17 September 2011

The Netherlands plans to ban burqas (face-covering veils) worn by some Muslim women.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte says the ban is aimed at protecting the country's way of life and culture.

The proposal will be sent to the Council of State (an advisory body to the government) before it reaches parliament.

A BBC correspondent says the move reflects the influence of the Freedom Party whose leader Geert Wilders backs Mr Rutte's minority government in parliament.
