The team that helped re-establish the hospital in the Samoan village of Poutasi following last week's devastating tsunami is confident local people can run it on their own again.

The clinic was destroyed in the tsunami triggered by an 8.0 earthquake, which killed 143 people in Samoa, at least 33 in American Samoa and nine in Tonga.

New Zealand army medics helped get the clinic running again and Captain Lincoln Nicholls says most tsunami-related cases have now been dealt with.

He is confident local medical staff can continue on their own and it is hoped the clinic can be back to offering a 24-hour service in a couple of months.

Meanwhile, the general manager of Samoa's health service, Dr Stanley Dean, says Australian and New Zealand surgeons have performed 134 operations since the tsunami struck.

He says of the 93 people initially admitted to hospital, 40 people remain and are likely to stay for another two to four weeks before being discharged to temporary accommodation.
