Iran sentences three protesters to death

Three people detained following Iran's disputed presidential election have been sentenced to death.

The judgements must be confirmed by a higher court, the BBC quote's Iran's ISNA news agency as saying.

Thousands of opposition supporters were arrested and more than 100 put on trial after the demonstrations in June protesting at the re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as president in a vote they believe was rigged.

A justice ministry official said two had been convicted for ties with a banned monarchist group and one for links with the People's Mujahideen, another group advocating the overthrow of the Islamic republic. No names have been released, however.

So far the only named opposition activist reported as having been sentenced to death over post-election protests is Mohammad Reza Ali Zamani.

Iranian analysts and activists say harsh penalties are often handed down to intimidate detainees and are not necessarily carried out, the BBC reports.
