Caulfield Cup race now wide open

7:55 am on 14 October 2009

The Caulfield Cup on Saturday is now wide open following the witdrawals of two of the favourite entries on Tuesday.

Last year's Cox Plate winner Maldivian won't be racing again this spring after pulling up sore after a track gallop on Tuesday morning.

And the connections of the European stayer Speed Gifted, which was the early favourite, have decided to bypass Caulfield and focus on the Cox Plate later this month.

The new top weight is last year's Melbourne Cup winner Viewed.

The three New Zealand hopes in the field of 18 are Red Ruler, Harris Tweed and Daffodil.
