Monsoon flooding in India

7:13 am on 27 September 2011

More than two million people are affected by floods in India as heavy monsoon rain continues to fall Orissa, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar states.

More than 80 people have died in the past fortnight.

A flood alert has been issued in eight districts in Bihar.

The BBC reports the worst affected state is Orissa, where officials say vast parts of 10 districts are flooded.

In Bihar state, a flood alert covers eight districts, including the capital, Patna, after a rise in the water levels on Ganges and Sone rivers.

The rivers are flooding their banks after a large amount of water was released from the Indrapuri barrage - the highest since 1975.
