Asylum seekers end hunger strike

An immigration official in Indonesia says Sri Lankan asylum seekers on a boat intercepted by Indonesian authorities have ended their hunger strike.

But the more than 250 Sri Lankans say they are staying on board the wooden boat in which they were intercepted as they tried to reach Australia, the ABC reports.

Shelters have been prepared for the asylum seekers in the port of Merak in western Java, but they say they will not move into them until they can speak to someone from the United Nations refugee agency.

The estimated 150 men on the boat had refused food since Thursday and at least two had been taken to hospital apparently suffering dehydration, officials said.
