US to engage with Khartoum - Clinton

10:41 am on 20 October 2009

The United States has announced a new policy on Sudan, of of active engagement by the United States with the Khartoum government instead of isolating it.

It offers incentives if the Khartoum government co-operates but only if there is progress on the ground.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the policy will hinge on three objectives: the end of the conflict in Darfur, implementation of a peace agreement with the South and a guarantee that Sudan will not be a safe haven for terrorists.

Mrs Clinton says co-operation could open the door to political and economic incentives, but failure to comply could lead to further sanctions.
