Rumours of holiday cuts spark student protests

Thousands of French schoolchildren have gone on the rampage after rumours that President Nicolas Sarkozy's government was taking a month's holiday off them.

The protests began in northern France and spread to the outskirts of Paris, where police say they arrested 10 people after high-school students rioted, turning cars on their side and smashing windows.

Another 18 were arrested in northern France.
