Human Rights Watch criticises treatment of prisoners in Libya

7:10 pm on 1 October 2011

Human Rights Watch has called on Libya's National Transitional Council to stop armed groups from making arbitrary arrests and abusing detainees.

The organisation visited 20 detention facilities and says it has received reports of mistreatment at six, including beatings and the use of electric shocks.

It says those accused of rape and killing appear to have suffered the worst treatment while their interrogators pressed them to confess.
