NATO forces have captured the senior commander for the Haqqani network in Afghanistan.

Haqqanis are linked to Al Qaeda and blamed for a string of attacks on Western targets.

NATO says Haji Mali Khan managed bases and operations in both Afghanistan and Pakistan and moved forces across the border for attacks, as well as transferring funds and sourcing supplies.

A statement issued on Saturday said he was captured on Tuesday in the Jani Khel district of Paktia province along with his deputy and bodyguard, in an operation by Afghan and foreign forces.

The Haqqani network was founded by Jalaluddin Haqqani, a warlord who made his name during the 1980s jihad against the Soviets in Afghanistan.
