The White House says its possible that President Barack Obama could make a decision on the number of United States troops in Afghanistan prior to an election run-off there on 7 November.

Mr Obama's critics have accused him of dithering because of the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan.

After weeks of political uncertainty and international pressure, President Hamid Karzai has agreed to an election run-off after a United Nations backed panel found evidence of fraud in the presidential election on 20 August.

The White House spokesperson said on Wednesday that Mr Obama could have a decision soon on the troops before the run-off is held.
