More asylum seekers intercepted

Another boatload of asylum seekers has reached Australian waters.

A boat carrying 72 people was intercepted north of Christmas Island on Friday night.

The ABC reports 10 boats carrying over 700 asylum seekers have now arrived since a swap deal with Malaysia was announced.

Those on board the latest boat will be taken to Christmas Island for health and security checks.

The federal opposition says the Malaysia swap deal is clearly not deterring people smugglers.

Customs and border protection spokesman Michael Keenan says the Gillard Government is giving them the green light.

''The people smugglers completely understand what happens in Australia,'' he said.

''They follow the policy debate here and when they see weakness like they do at the moment, they obviously accelerate the rate of illegal arrivals they're sending down," he said.
