The US ambassador to the Philippines, Harry Thomas, has apologised for saying that 40% of male tourists visit the country for sex.

His remark during a conference last month led to an outcry in the Philippines, with officials unhappy their country was being portrayed by the ambassador as a sex haven.

The American embassy confirmed Mr Thomas has now expressed regret for his comments, the BBC reports.

The US has been asking the Philippines to do more to prosecute foreigners involved in child prostitution.
