In Queensland, people are mopping up after severe thunderstorms and hail battered the south-east of the state, leaving one person dead and thousands of homes without power.

There were scores of road accidents because of the hail and a man was killed when two cars collided at Ormeau, the ABC reports.

Emergency services received more than 80 calls for help from people with minor roof damage from hail.

The worst damage was on the Gold Coast, where a large light pole crashed onto a football clubhouse.

At Strathpine, to the north of Brisbane, there were reports of golf ball-sized hail that caused damage to roofs, cars and windows.
