Frustration at voting queues in Kiribati

3:45 pm on 21 October 2011

There have been complaints about the slow pace of voting in parliamentary elections at polling stations in Betio in Kiribati.

The first round of voting in the elections is taking place on Friday and Radio New Zealand International's reporter in Kitibati says the queues to vote have seen some people in Betio waiting for up to an hour to cast their ballot.

There have also been disputes over the order of the ballot papers for Betio, where voters are to choose three MPs.

Elsewhere voting is going smoothly.

Results from the first round of voting are expected to be known on Saturday morning.
