Police remove protesters from Melbourne square

Defiant protesters in Australia have clashed with police, who have forcibly removed them from a city square.

The protesters, who say they are inspired by the Occupy Wall Street protest in New York, have been camping in Melbourne's City Square for a week, and refused to obey an eviction order served by the city council on Friday morning.

Police warned them they had two hours to leave and when they did not budge, riot and mounted police moved in to forcibly remove more than 100 protesters.

It is not clear how many arrests have been made, or whether anyone has been injured.

The ABC says the eviction order followed complaints from traders in nearby streets that the occupation of the square was damaging their trade.

The Queen is also due to visit Melbourne next week.
