United States police have arrested a gunman who opened fire in an office building in Florida, killing one person and injuring five others.

The attack took place on the fourth floor of the Gateway Center building in Orlando about 11.30am local time on Friday.

Police identified the gunman as Jason Rodriguez, 40, a former employee of a company with offices in the building.

Mr Rodriguez had been an engineer at the company until he was fired in 2007.

He was arrested at his mother's house after fleeing the scene.

Panicked workers barricaded themselves into their offices as police marksmen rushed to the building.

The incident comes a day after an army major fatally shot 13 people at a military base in Texas.
